Local Businesses Collaborate with Carleton University Students to Open an Exhibition on Architectural and Design Salvage

Ottawa, ON – Today, Radical Reuse: Reclaiming Design Abundance opened at Scrim’s Florist on Elgin Street. The exhibition is a partnership between The Rejoinery, Scrim’s Florist and Carleton University Graduate students in the Curatorial Studies program. Radical Reuse explores how Ottawa’s design salvage can be restored and repurposed for the contemporary home. A realization of the Rejoinery’s mission to promote community sustainability and heritage preservation practices to Ottawa, the exhibit aims to challenge our culture of overconsumption.

Radical Reuse imagines a future for design that embraces the abundance that already surrounds us, making design heritage a feature of modern aesthetics. The display centres around a stunning 1916 fireplace grille, demonstrating how salvaged architecture can bring generational craftsmanship to our everyday homes. Passersby on Elgin Street who peer into the contemporary living room scene will appreciate fine furniture and home goods provided by local businesses, including decor from nearby Pot & Pantry and modern pieces from The Modern Shop on Sussex Drive.

This interior is adorned with beautiful plants and florals by Scrim’s Florist, who have generously agreed to host the exhibition as an act of eco-activism, sharing their support for environmental stewardship and the Ottawa arts community. By blending salvaged design pieces with contemporary décor, the exhibit demonstrates how objects can be given new lives through stewardship. This exhibit is a pilot project from The Rejoinery, an emerging not-for-profit that aims to preserve and rehome Ottawa’s material past. Almost all items on display can be purchased through The Rejoinery or its partner businesses. The exhibition is on display from April 7th until May 4th, 2026. Visitors are invited to come into Scrim’s Florist to view the display.

A vibrant workshop and design space, Scrim’s cultivates contemporary design and creative expression. With its floor-to-ceiling windows and prime corner location at Elgin and Somerset, the shop is once again transforming into a professional gallery in support of local initiatives and cultural movements. Owner Susan Murray is excited to introduce clients to new perspectives, highlighting both the historical influences and philosophical vision behind the Rejoinery’s mission. This thoughtful collaboration marks an exciting evolution for Scrim’s Florist as it continues to grow into an open, dynamic hub for creative exchange and artistic partnerships.

“The Rejoinery began with refusal: refusal of unnecessary extraction, of planned obsolescence, and of accepting waste as inevitable. We believe that novelty isn't synonymous with progress; that the new isn’t inherently better. Radical Reuse is a provocation, challenging audiences to re-imagine salvage as a source of utility and beauty with which to furnish their own homes." - Trina Cooper-Bolam, The Rejoinery
